Redefining Confidence: Millicent Olasanoye’s Journey Through Beauty and Culture

TribesAndHistory: What’s your name?
Millicent: My name is Millicent Olasanoye.

TribesAndHistory: Where are you from?
Millicent: I was born in the U.S., but I’m Nigerian by heritage.

TribesAndHistory: What do you do?
Millicent: I’m a business owner specializing in beauty and cosmetics.

TribesAndHistory: What inspired you to pursue this career?
Millicent: I’ve always seen myself as unique and creative. Whether it was cutting up a pair of jeans or adding safety pins to a T-shirt, I’ve always found ways to express myself authentically. That passion for individuality inspired me to create a business that celebrates beauty in all its forms.

TribesAndHistory: Tell us more about your business.
Millicent: I founded Tulip Eyes Makeup Artistry in 2010, and later, T.E.C. Cosmetics in 2020. For me, life is an adventure, and makeup is a way to have fun while expressing yourself. My goal is to use my talent to empower women, especially those who’ve faced challenges like domestic violence, by helping them feel confident and beautiful.

TribesAndHistory: Can you share a pivotal moment in your career that shaped you as a leader?
Millicent: I can’t pinpoint one specific moment, but I’ve learned valuable lessons from every relationship—professional and personal. I realized early on that I wanted more than just the average lifestyle; I wanted freedom. That desire led me to pursue entrepreneurship and shaped the leader I am today.

TribesAndHistory: How has your African heritage influenced your journey?
Millicent: My Nigerian heritage has deeply influenced my creativity, particularly in art and fashion. It gave me a unique perspective and a deeper passion for makeup. Growing up, I saw how girls and women everywhere struggled with self-esteem and identity. Makeup became a universal language of confidence and connection for me. That realization fuels my passion for giving back and empowering others through beauty.

TribesAndHistory: What role does your culture play in your career and decision-making?
Millicent: My culture influences me in three powerful ways: it makes me innovative, meticulous, and investigative. These traits guide my leadership style and decision-making process every day.

TribesAndHistory: What legacy do you hope to leave for future generations of Africans?
Millicent: I want to leave a legacy that unites women—a strong, supportive sisterhood built on genuine compassion. I hope to inspire women to lift each other up and create a world where we all thrive together.

TribesAndHistory: What about your heritage makes you most proud?
Millicent: There’s so much to be proud of, but what stands out most is our tenacity and unshakable faith in God.

TribesAndHistory: Any final words of wisdom?

Millicent: Struggles in life are inevitable, but they’re not permanent. I continue to trust God through it all. One of my favorite scriptures is, “God is within her; she will not fall. God will help her at the break of day” (Psalms 46:5).
